I wrote several emails to the PSN list on 2/5 through 2/7/00 with the
the subject heading:
fluxgates vs Speake and Precision Navigational magnetometers
in which I described picking up the anti-theft tags in parking lots of
electronic stores such as the Warehouse and Best Buy. These are the
little 1-1/2 inch by 1/2 inch white plastic stick on things you see on
the CD's, and generally the outside of the shipping boxes of equip. Rip
it apart, and the very metallic, glassy strip is Metglas. The other
strip inside is steel and is matt finish and is not springy like the
Metglas. Another source is to talk to a librarian. Almost all the
anti-theft tags for library books are a soft permalloy strip 6.5 x 0.13
inches which should be the better of the two in terms of noise floor.
If you want the old emails, go the the PSN archives or drop me an email
and I'll forward them. I don't want to clutter the list with repeats.
