There is a very interesting article "The Physics of Earthquakes" in Physics
Today, June, 2001 p. 34-40.  It describes what can be inferred about
earthquakes from seismology, among other things, and has same references to
some general books about seismology.  Physics Today is sent to members of
the American Physical Society and is also available in many libraries.
