Today very few seismic stations are recorded on a drum recorder.
The
expense of the drum and paper, combined with the daily chore of
changing the paper make this technique much less desirable than
recording digitally with a PC computer. Also, with digital
recording
one can adjust the time and amplitude scales as well as the filter
settings after an earthquake has been recorded. This is
especially
helpful in making measurements.
One option that is quite easy to set up would be to purchase an
AS1 instrument for $550.00. In addition to the instrument you
would
need a PC computer running MSWindows and the free software
AmaSeis, which can be downloaded from the web.
