Bob may be right about this being two events.  As soon as there is 
another 3.5 event within 175 km of Jon's station, it will be clear if 
he is able to see it clearly.  If not, then that would argue for the 
two-event interpretation.  The separation of the two phases is very 
close to what would be expected for the S-P interval from the distant 
events, so that argues for my interpretation.
