As Larry said, it should be connected to the 0 Volt terminal for the power supply.

If the geophone has a metal body then that should be connected to the shield 
wire too. It may be best to then electrically insulate the geophone body from 
true ground.

Can you draw an electrical diagram of what you have installed ?

Is there anything near the sensor that could generate a magnetic pulse ?
