I don't know if this will be of any help but in a past life I worked in
the labs at Ziff Publications (PC Magazine and Computer Shopper) and we
used a "bonker" to keep the system alive during battery rundown testing.
The bonker was a solenoid with a rubber tip that would tap a key to keep
the system from going into power saving states John described below.

Be sure the CPU doesn't go into a partial sleep mode if the keyboard 
isn't being used.  This cost us a few trips from Fairbanks to  SE 
Alaska to figure out a few years ago.
