Before you go "bonkers", it is much simpler to turn off the hibernate
and/or standby functions. Go to the Windows Control Panel and run the
power management applet. From there you can disable the hibernate and
standby functions and may find other options to help control the power
drain.
And, most laptops have a function to direct the video output to an
external monitor instead of the laptop's display panel. If you do this,
you effectively turn off the display panel and save the power it
consumes. You can do this without connecting an external monitor
