Hi Ted, 

       Think coils, not magnets!

       Use four coils, one pair N/S and the other E/W, connected in 
opposition on a cross, with the magnet pole in the centre. Then when the magnet swings 
N & S, or E/W, you will get  the resolved components of that signal.
