Hi Gary,

       Unless they are carbide or stainless steel they won't last long. You 
get surface corrosion actively promoted between dry rolling surfaces. And I 
would advise against using oil. It doesn't last long and the bearings tend to 
slip out of position.

        You can get polished stainless type 415 shoulder bolts from McMaster 
Carr. http://www.mcmaster.com/ I think that John Cole uses these.
