I'd assumed that carbon fiber composite = graphite fiber composite.  Sorry 
for the confusion.

They do need to be pretty thin for ordinary-sized instruments in order to 
not have them going beyond their yield strength when bending them to the 
necessary curve.  As I recall 0.008" - 0.015" is the range of thickness 
that usually turns out to be appropriate.  You also want to be using 
one-directional materal, oriented along the spring length.  I don't think 
that woven or mat material works as well.
