Quentin,

I would check the weight of the boom.  The weight of a 24" piece of 
1/2" square, 1/16" wall aluminum tube should be roughly 4oz 
(113g).  If the boom weighs a lot more than that, the suggested 
spring likely wouldn't be able to support it properly.
