This is quite interesting,

But I was thinking they started drilling or whatever a mile away
and run their device or mine right under your home
or residence a thousand feet down.
They might not need any permission at all
if they hold mineral rights.

Not many home owners have cellars deeper than
a few feet.

If the land is severed between surface and mineral ownership, the owner of the mineral rights may lease the land for drilling.  The 
lessee then has the right to drill on the property, but must negotiate and settle with the surface owner for whatever damages are 
inflicted on the property.  In most areas where there has been much drilling, this amount is usually predetermined.  Leases normally 
contain a provision that the lessee cannot drill within a designated distance from an abode.  Lessee must also maintain roads, etc.

I talked to the father of an ex-student that owns an oil drilling
company in this area. He said that YouTube had a piece on the
Pennsylvanian NBC News bit that claimed that the problem pictured
showing gas on top of the water existed before the
fracking/hydrofracturing/fracing ever started.  He confirmed my belief
that this procedure was a common practice in southern Illinois for years
(maybe not with horizontal drilling). If you don't have an up-to--date
knowledge about oil/gas well drilling, I would urge you to spend some
time looking through YouTube. I spent about 2 hours and it was worth
every minute. I started using the word,  fracking, which led to the
other topics listed above as well as underbalanced and overbalanced
drilling and blowouts.There are interesting bits about New York State,
Pennsylvania and Texas. Don't be discouraged by the antidrilling-group
bits you have to pass over.
