Brett,

Thanks so much for the reference to this 206 page "book"! It does indeed
"stretch" the vertical
problems and ~ complicated resolutions.

In short; do you have more (~ reserved) web references to other instruments
in your possession,
you may wish to feed our knowledge base or imagination?

Randall and Meredith,

Here's a link to Jos=E9 Otero's dissertation which describes in gre= at detail the feedback-less optical design, the 'iSTS-1'.

"Development and Characterization of an Observatory-class, Broadband, = Non-Fedback, Leaf-Spring Interferometric Seismometer" http://proquest.umi.com/pqdlink?did=3D18558741= 41&Fmt=3D6&VType=3DPQD&VInst=3DPROD&RQT=3D309&VName=3DP= QD&TS=3D1297644594&clientId=3D79356 (23MB)

Incidentally, in there is the experiment you (Randall) were wanting someone= to perform to characterize anelastic effects in a seismometer spring.

Interesting design, which to some degree confirms my contention that making= a feedback design perform well is way easier.

A less-detailed paper on the instrument is in the BSSA =A0v100, n2, p598. = =A0 In speaking with one of the authors it was clear to me that its tempera= ture sensitivity is such that it would need to go into a deep, temperature = stable, borehole. =A0However, that is facilitated by the fact that it has n= o electronics at the sensor, with the displacement signal able to be record= ed at the surface via optical fibers.
