Those little clock type motors don't draw excessive current if stalled.
Likely the insulation went due to age.

WD40 isn't a lubricant, even if it says so on the can.
It was developed to displace water and clean out crud. (WD40 = water
displacement formula 40)

I repaired instruments for years and the best all purpose lubricant I've
used is Tri-Flow.
It's great on just about any delicate instrument, except where a light
grease is needed.

Just my 2 cent's worth...

Wunderbar,
Live And learn.

I was thinking possibly it was a synchronous
squirrel cage motor which was used
and that too will not draw much
if stalled. But those with
slip rings are another matter to consider.
I'm really far out in left field when
it comes to anything technical ptoday.
I've been out of the real world for over 30 years
and have no intention of ever rejoining the human race.
Its just too disturbing to deal with their Civilian Religious Value system.
The only thing I know is the number of poles a motor has
determines the ultimate rotational speed of some motors.
Like 2 poles is 30Hz plus a slip rate of one percent or so
under load. or so I understand.
In the old days they used these ball things
to govern speed. I thought maybe, [chuckle],
some of this amateur stuff might use those
spinning ball things to govern speed.
Sort of a Rube Goldberg recording device.
