Hello

And I live in Oslo, Norway, about 600,000 people. I live 25 meters
away from one of the tram/underground lines, which is no problem at
all even for my geophones. We can easily hear the trains as a slight
rumble, but they hardly show up on the 4.5 Hz geophones. The
frequency of most of the noise seems to high to become much trouble.

The geophones do pick up more noise during the daytime, probably
mostly due to local car traffic, but this I would rate far below other
sources of noise. The primary noise (for the seismometer) is the
turbulent sea in western Norway about 400 km away (might last for
days). Then there are wind gusts (> ~5 m/s) making our house shake
(shows up on the geophone). And activity in our house (walking,
washing machine, etc). Then I'd say city noise.

I can easily pick up 1.0 mag quakes within 50 km on the geophones
during night time, and usually during day time as well. A 5.0 quake
usually has to be closer than 7500 km to show up on the seismometer,
but if the western coast is stormy, even a 6.0 quake at this distance
will require some filtering to become visible.
