The lack of government standards to day
has created a revolution in computers which literally
nickel dimes you, the consumer,  to death.
An Ethernet today is not what it originally was to be.
You did not seem to have full duplex capability.
I think it should not be called Ethernet but something different.
Full duplex is generally better than simplex.
But Ethernet was never originally meant to be Full duplex, or so I understand.
Just Pandemonium on a wire.
Likewise the auto industry will sell a model of auto which is
markedly different from one year to the next but will have the same name.
ITS Like calling an orange an apple. Or red is blue.

You can still use 10base2 Ethernet, which is what the coax kind of 
Ethernet is called. The more modern Ethernet network is 10baseT, 
100baseT, 1000baseT, etc. These use twisted-pair cables. The trouble is 
you can't buy new network cards that support 10base2, and the coax and 
terminators are more expensive than the wiring for the more modern 
varieties. You can probably find 10base2 adapters on Ebay, but it's 
doubtful they will have PCI connectors that fit modern desktop motherboards.

You can connect two computers together using twisted-pair Ethernet with 
a crossover cable. Similar to a null-modem cable for RS-232. But you're 
limited to two, and that doesn't get you an Internet connection unless 
you connect to the Internet using a phone modem in one of the computers.

I've heard of schemes to network computers together using parallel 
ports, serial ports, and USB; but I don't know anything more about them.
