Hi Geoff,

I gotta believe that you can get XP and Win-7 talkig to each other.  I'm 
not enough of a networking expert to figure it out from your 
descriptions of what you have tried, but there is a technical help forum 
site that is intended to help people with practically any sort of 
problem (link to the site is below).  You have to register with the site 
to post a question, but it is free, and the only intent is to prevent 
trouble makers from causing problems.  These guys really know their 
stuff, and there is a forum section specifically intended for networking 
issues.
