I just finished reading the book, Oasis In Space - Earth History from the
Beginning by Preston Cloud, WW Norton and Co. I have always been curious
about earth's history and wanted to get more information on how minerals for
mining, coal and oil were formed. This book gave me all this information and
much more. It starts out 4.6 billion years ago as earth first formed. There
was no atmosphere, no solid surface, no magnetic shield, just molten matter
with asteroids and meteors hitting the surface, volcanoes flowing lava, it
was hell. The early earth day was only 6 hours and the moon was much closer.
Things changed, earth cooled and somehow bacteria formed and life evolved.
The author mostly describes geologic history, volcanoes, earthquakes and
plate tectonics. Earth had quite a history and it really is an Oasis.
