Well your reply made me wonder if I had totally mis-remembered.  So a 
bit of Googling and I found this which is probably as good a summary as 
I need for the moment:

Some states do, and some states do not require prescription.  So where 
you live has a lot to do with the ease of obtaining needles/syringes. 
I'm sure you're right about being able to get them through the web.

Many years ago I had a syringe I used for a precision oiler.  With the 
finer needles available in a medical syringe, it made a great oil 
dispenser.
