Who would know the answer to such a question
but a real live physicist.

To me all waves through matter are related
to compression and rarefaction of the matter
itself which may be looked at as temperature
changes since compression increases density and temp
and rarefaction does the opposite.
I too need an explanation to understand the
wave through a medium any other way.

Pendulums are an exchange of energy between
potential and kinetic and I thought
all waves even light itself to be related
to this idea.

Looking at light I might even say some kind
of particle is phasing between matter and energy
existing as energy as it moves and only
for an instant in time as a stationary particle.

Just a thought, I don't really understand this myself.
But when things conflict in science it would not
surprise me if the real answer is a combination
of the two or more in a way no one thinks about.
