Hi Geoff,

the FBV instrument, named "Inyo," was designed by Brett Nordgren and Dave N=
elson. The instrument design, though completely specified by Brett and Dave=

s/needs/expertise of the builder.=A0 Several models of the "Inyo" have been=
constructed by the folks in the little group of amateurs that I am proud t=
o be a part of.

I used scrap metal shapes and purchased what I needed, and did the machinin=
g in my shop.=A0 I don't have an overall cost (but I believe the materials =
/ parts I had to purchase totaled to=A0a figure=A0far below $200); that wou=
ld depend on what mechanical materials and electronic parts the builder alr=
eady has at-hand during construction.
=A0
The two sensors I am currently running at AlabamaQuake (the FBV, and the ol=
d horizontal Shackleford-Gundersen) are both sitting on a poured concrete p=
ier, on a limestone rock outcropping in the basement of my house.=20
=A0
The FBV is in a sealed PlexiGlass case, which could be vacuum-evacuated, bu=
t I have it sealed at a nominal ambient pressure, to allow for some dissipa=
tion of heat from the on-board electronics while still preventing disturban=
ces from the constant atmospheric pressure changes.=A0 The FBV instrument s=
its on the floor of the sealed pressure case, a glazed ceramic tile that is=
cement-grouted to two concrete-block pavers that make a total base thickne=
ss of some 3.5 inches.=A0 The base is supported on three feet made of large=
 lead fishing sinkers.
=A0
I hope that rough explanation suffices.

Thanks,
Steve

Hello Steve,

The Vertical Device
Force-Balance Broadband Vertical
Looks Like a Mechanical Engineer
and not an amateur built it.

The construction style and materials
are very similar to things i saw
within the USN.

Can you tell me more about the builders
their backgrounds and how much
such a device might cost to buy
either as a kit or prebuilt ?

ALSO,

Is that case vacuum sealed ?
If it is vacuum sealed, then:
Does the device rest on Plexiglass
or the pedestal foundation ?

The two sensors I am currently running at AlabamaQuake (the= FBV, and the old horizontal Shackleford-Gundersen) are both sitting on a p= oured concrete pier, on a limestone rock outcropping in the basement of my = house.

The FBV is in a sealed PlexiGlass case, which could be vacu= um-evacuated, but I have it sealed at a nominal ambient pressure, to allow = for some dissipation of heat from the on-board electronics while still prev= enting disturbances from the constant atmospheric pressure changes.  The FBV instrument sits on the floo= r of the sealed pressure case, a glazed ceramic tile that is cement-grouted= to two concrete-block pavers that make a total base thickness of some 3.5 = inches.  The base is supporte= d on three feet made of large lead fishing sinkers.

I hope that rough explanation suffices.

Thanks,

Steve
