Gary, Your suggestion of using a pin vise to hold a very small drill bit and then in turn chucking the pin vise in a drill press chuck is a great one. You received lots of answ= ers and here is a couple more hints. I used a pin vice to hold the small dr= ill bits. McMaster-Carr http://www.mcmaster.com=A0 is a = good place to get everything you need at good prices and fast shipping. A d= rill press is required to drill small holes. You can get drills that go dow= n to .010" or smaller. The pin vice is used to hold these small drill = bits and then you mount the pin vice in the drill vice. The drill press wil= l probably have run-out and it will look as if that small bit is going all = over the place. But just lower the drill slowly and aim for the center punc= h mark and the drill bit will straighten right up (hopefully). Then slowly = drill into the brass.
Good luck,<= /span>

I know that this is a long shot, but does anyone have= parts for an old Spregnether horizontal seismometer?=A0 Specifically the l= ower wire hinge.=A0 The piece is a short wire with a round brass fitting at= each end.=A0 I tried to make it myself using piano wire and round brass st= ock.=A0 But drilling the round brass stock to insert the wire into has been= fraught with failure thus far since the very small drill bits I purchased = at the hobby shop keep breaking,=A0 Also, any advice on drilling an approxi= mately .030 diameter hole in round brass stock would also be appreciated.= =A0 Do machine shops do this kind of work?
