I am NOT the one to answer this....I have never been in that locality. 
Looking at the USGS (geolgoic) map for that part of California, that 
area is described as a "trough" and most of the area is listed as 
Cenozoic nonmarine sediments. I would suspect salt deposits. But looking 
a little closer there are remnants of several faults in the area; 
namely, Imperial and Salton. And there is a reference to a few small 
pre-Cenozoic metamorphic rock intrusions along the faults. This area was 
the feature of a talk at Menlo Park (podcast) within the last year.
