I like the photocell idea
also i guess i might try a
CdS photo resistive element.
Thanks for the feedback.
Right now i hear occasional fireworks.
Its like 2335 local time MST or UTC -7hrs
We are near the last to see new years in the usa.
Its funny, here in Arizona, a store might sell
fireworks but, is illegal to use what you buy
within the same town.
Only the mildest of fireworks are legal here
unless you are blasters working for the mines
in Globe or Miami AZ.
I think, people who blast are licensed to do so.
Happy 2013,

Hi Geoff,
Curiously enough I was interested at one time in a omni
directional seismometer but also wanted directional
information. What I ended up with was a pendulum with 2
degrees of freedom which via a quadrant photo cell resolved
the N-S, E-W component independently.
As my wife’s family is in Japan I am on permanent
earthquake watch for anything from there. If the first
responses are identical in amplitude and both of the same
polarity I know the quake is on the N-E S-W axis. The time
interval between the P and the S give of course the distance
and being based in England, I have a choice of ether the
middle of South America or of the east coast of Japan. Any
thing over M6.5 and my wife is straight on the phone to Japan.
Regards Martin
