a geophone should be a good detection tool and may be an alternative to 
monitoring gravity fluctuations.  The geophone will pick up some magma 
movements that occur before eruptions.

A reliable four wheel drive vehicle should perhaps be higher on the 
shopping list, though, in case evacuation is required! :-)
