Barry, et al: To compress the spring in a controlled way, I made a clamp out of some 3/8" square aluminum bars and some 10-32 threaded rods. With one clamp on each side of the leaf spring, I can slowly and very controllably compress the leaf spring by tightening nuts on the threaded rods.
