Has he considered a nail on a string? Just kidding, but I have a great little paperback called "Science for the Airline Passenger". One of the experiments is to use a goniometer (angle meter) conveniently printed on the back cover to calculate your acceleration during takeoff by holding a string and a weight against the book. I've done it and it's pretty accurate, you end up with a final speed near the actual plane speed. And no need to turn it off during takeoff and landing!
